- Why ultra-processed foods matter: the state of world hunger - Food Politics by Marion Nestle foodpolitics.com

As the amount of UPF we eat rises, so do rates of cancer and diabetes. Riddled with additives that are crammed into tiny print on the sides of packs, such food constitutes 57% of Britons’ energy intake. This is the highest in Europe, comparing with 14% in France and 13% in Italy. Being overweight or obese affects 63% of adults in England, among the highest percentage in Europe. There now appears to be incontrovertible evidence that such a diet heightens the risk not just of diabetes and cancer but cardiovascular disease and dementia.

<blockquote>So we need supermarkets. The problem is, we really don’t need the kind of supermarkets we’ve got. By giving too small a set of companies a free run at too much of the retail food economy, we have put at risk our future food security. We used to be well over 70% self-sufficient in food in the UK. Now it’s below 60%, and when you look at the proportion of food we consume that’s produced here, it’s 50%.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Does the BBC treasure him? Does it understand the talent it has in its possession? "I don't really think so, no. They don't always say yes. If I say I want to do four hours about brutalism, they'll give me two. The last film we had to do in just 19 days. You can't do any fancy set-ups: no cranes, no dollies. It's not slavery, obviously, but it's much more difficult than it used to be. My subjects are regarded as minoritarian and that's a self-fulfilling prophecy. On BBC2, I used to get 2.5 million to 3 million viewers; now I get a tenth of that on BBC4."</blockquote>

I should note that this idea is the same for any other addiction: biting your nails, smoking, drugs, alcohol, etc. We use them as crutches to cope with our needs, and to beat them we need to find healthier methods of coping and meeting our needs.
