- Is Bluesky dying? - by James Ball - Techtris jamesrball.com
This is where the culture stuff comes in: Bluesky is hostile in different ways to new normie users and to new power users. The absence of a default algorithm makes Bluesky quite boring and difficult to a new user. Yes, there are starter packs and custom feeds, etc, but that’s all quite complicated. Just like most users don’t use Linux on desktop, most people want a plug-in-and-play social experience. Bluesky isn’t that.
Or maybe all text-based social media (including Bluesky) has become riven by politics, which is exhausting and just not that much fun.

Blog Quest is a web browser extension that helps you discover and subscribe to blogs. Blog Quest checks each page for auto-discoverable RSS and Atom feeds (using rel="alternate" links) and quietly collects them in the background. When you’re ready to explore the collected feeds, open the extension’s drop-down window.
- The single source of truth: why you still need a website in the age of AI offbrandkoto.substack.com
Once you embrace this mindset, your website’s core job becomes clear: to act as the single source of truth for both humans and AI. This is the foundation that gives you the freedom to express your brand fully, creating a memorable, immersive experience that can’t be replicated elsewhere.
The stakes are high, but I think we have a real shot to collectively end the era of centralized social platforms.

- The AI flight attendants of Facebook garbageday.email
The fact that, in the span of less than year, Facebook effectively removed anything resembling news from the platform, even conservative news, and allowed AI-generated spam to take its place, and both investors and advertisers don’t care, should tell you all you need to know about what social networks are in 2024. They’re a data holding pen for advertisers to harvest and it seems like Meta has finally given up pretending they’re anything else.

Most public services deteriorated in the decade from 2010 under the pressure of austerity, and then deteriorated again during the pandemic. It is not easy to see how they will recover, since many years of weak economic growth have left the UK somehow achieving the trifecta of high taxes, chronic budget deficits and inadequate public services.
Good times.

Perhaps what we’re seeing is the disentangling of social media back into social and media: newsletters and podcasts are best understood as being part of the media spectrum, even if many of them are smaller and have community spaces attached. And Discord space, Slack spaces, etc, these virtual neighbourhoods are pure social.

Worth it. Overdue. Helps explain noticeable burn-out type feelings. "There are organizing principles for what is considered a "good" idea. These ideas are supposed to be the right size and shape. There is a default spreadsheet that we expect ideas to fit onto. But maybe it's time that changed."

Frictionless sharing has the same drawback as “effortless poetry”: its final products are often intolerable. It’s one thing to find an interesting article and choose to share it with friends. It’s quite another to inundate your friends with everything that passes through your browser or your app, hoping that they will pick something interesting along the way.
- The Social Network That Stole Christmas gizmodo.com
"You're not going to find as many people in there. And that's the point. Path isn't cluttered with self-promotional links or YouTube videos of sneezing cats. You're not going to see plug in games. And that's also the point. You're not going to see the glurge and hurge of illiterate rage and hash tag garbage. There's no bitching about not getting an iPad for Christmas. There's no call to re-post this as your status. No obnoxious comments from your hyper-political third-cousin twice removed. There's no tiresome, turgid competition for the best status updates as one-liners, or increasingly drunken series of 25 photos from last night's party.
In its place is private conversation. A few photos. Maybe a video. A location. A very small look at your friends' lives. A glimpse into the things they aren't sharing elsewhere. It is purely personal. And the thing is, I never realized that I needed that. But I do."

There is a company that sells radar equipment to the police as well as radar detectors to the public. Clorox is one of the world’s worst polluters of water, and also sells Brita filters to get the bad stuff out of the water again. Lawyers create mazes that you have to hire a lawyer to escape. Similarly social software both creates and cures FOMO. If you didn’t know that party was going on, you’d be home contentedly reading your latest New Yorker. But since you do, you hungrily watch each new tweet.

Gamification is the wrong word for the right idea. The word for what’s happening at the moment is pointsification. There are things that should be pointsified. There are things that should be gamified. There are things that should be both. There are many, many things that should be neither.

I'm not willing to accept that it's impossible to create a legitimately enjoyable game experience in the confines of the short attention span Facebook model, though. Scrabble, for example, lends itself perfectly to asynchronous, light, casual play (cf Scrabulous, Words with Friends). But it's legitimately fun at the same time. You're rewarded for imaginative approaches to solving problems. You can play with no skill or lots, but either way, you'll always find ways to get better. Most important: You're genuinely spending time with your friends. Sharing an experience that creates a memory. This is a big deal. This is missing from almost every other pseudo-social game.
