- The Economist’s Tom Standage on digital strategy and the limits of a model based on advertising » Nieman Journalism Lab niemanlab.org
The Economist has taken the view that advertising is nice, and we’ll certainly take money where we can get it, but we’re pretty much expecting it to go away.

Massive, quite useful presentation from Paul Adams at Google
What should other artists do? Well, I'm not really bothered. The sad truth is that almost everything almost every artist tries to earn money will fail. This has nothing to do with the internet, of course. Consider the remarkable statement from Alanis Morissette's attorney at the Future of Music Conference: 97% of the artists signed to a major label before Napster earned $600 or less a year from it. And these were the lucky lotto winners, the tiny fraction of 1% who made it to a record deal. Almost every artist who sets out to earn a living from art won't get there (for me, it took 19 years before I could afford to quit my day job), whether or not they give away their work, sign to a label, or stick it through every letterbox in Zone 1.
- Adactio: Journal—Ship talk adactio.com
Quick summary of the Tom Taylor, Bobbie Johnson, Paul Ford media/shipping discussion plus nice reiteration on (no) comments: "I don’t think we should be looking at comments to see conversations. It isn’t much of a conversation when the same person determines the subject matter of every dialogue. The best online conversations I’ve seen have been blog to blog: somebody posts something on their blog; somebody else feels compelled to respond on their own blog. The quality of such a response is nearly always better than a comment on the originating blog for the simple reason that people care more about what appears on their own site than on someone else’s."

- Four crowdsourcing lessons from the Guardian’s (spectacular) expenses-scandal experiment » Nieman Journalism Lab niemanlab.org
"Journalism has been crowdsourced before, but it’s the scale of the Guardian’s project — 170,000 documents reviewed in the first 80 hours, thanks to a visitor participation rate of 56 percent — that’s breathtaking." Brilliant.

- The forecast for 2009: Mobile is the key, says Goldmund Byrne of The Sun | Media | guardian.co.uk guardian.co.uk
"An increasing number of mobiles are coming with flat-rate data access as standard. Remember how much more eagerly we used the net when we stopped paying by the minute? Stop the cost clock and mobile booms. Checking mail, synching calendars. Using geo-tagging and location aware services to see what's cool and nearby for a quick impulse buy." No more in the article than that. Ranty counterpoint in the comments.

2008 may well also be the year of Peak Advertising. In the West at least. The year in which there is the most advertising. And after that there's less and less each year.
Not a particular fan of Reznor but there's some smart opinions in this piece.
