I’ve seen a lot of web apps launched recently which haven’t succeeded. They’re not failing miserably, and they’re not wild successes. They’re just kind of puttering along, sapping just enough resources to be a problem, but not succeeding enough to really take off. The majority of these apps were built by small web design firms or freelancers who bought into the dream without really understanding how much time it takes to make an app succeed.

If all you're looking for is information access and traditional web type interactions with your users, then your investments will likely be better spent on a slick mobile site that differentiates for high, medium and low end devices. Your in-house web development folks ought to be able to crank something suitable out for you. If you want deeper interaction with the user or device, then you're going to start looking native. Development costs will be higher, timelines will be longer and life cycle management of your application is going to be much more involved, but you will get keystroke level interaction with the user and complete integration with the underlying OS. Widgets (and their engines) fall out somewhere in the middle.

Google has started looking for microformats and RDFa. Finally, something concrete to put in front of clients when arguing for microformats.

Google announced that it was following in the footsteps of Yahoo’s SearchMonkey in indexing microformats and RDFa to display in search results. For now, it’s a subset of microformats—hCard and hReview—on a subset of websites, including the newly microformated Yelp. The list of approved sites will increase over time so if you’re already publishing structured contact and review information, let Google know about it. But the other new announcement is equally important. After a lot of hard work, the value class pattern is ready for use.

I’ve yet to meet a developer who would choose to build a screen from a wireframe over a Photoshop document, regardless of how many helpful and important details the wireframes may contain. Shot stereoscopically (i.e. on 2 identical cameras separated in space to mimic 2 eyes) the clip uses a flicking technique that was inspired by 2 frame animations of 3D photos.

In this technique, a sense of depth is provided to the footage by changing between the left and right eye views between each frame. In moving footage, not only does it add a sense of depth but also a definite intensity and alternative reality to each scene. For different people, it can create a curious mental floatiness in some shots.
